Gender differences in earnings remain at the core of inequality debate in Europe and elsewhere. Gintare Mazeikaite and Merve Uzunalioglu elaborate on the reasons why earnings gaps arise and persist. The authors highlight annual trends in gender employment and earnings gaps since the early 2000s in the three German-speaking European countries – Austria, Germany and Switzerland – , placing a particular focus on the difference between men and women with children as compared to those without.
