Janet Gornick reviews four decades of LIS at the Atkinson Conference
On 11 September 2026, Janet Gornick delivered a keynote lecture titled “Cross-National Inequality Data and Research, 1983–2026: The View From Inside LIS” at the Atkinson Conference on Economic and Social Inequality in Oxford.
In her keynote, Professor Gornick traced the development of LIS’s data and research, reflected on Sir Tony Atkinson’s close relationship with LIS, and discussed the challenges of comparing inequality data from different sources. View the presentation slides from here.
Gornick is a Professor of Political Science and Sociology at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she directs the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality and the US Office of LIS. She previously served as LIS Director from 2006 to 2016.
