Recoding was not carried out. In the UK dataset, there is some level information available, but the categories are not enough precise to derive an ISCED coding from this. The reason for that is that category "educational qualifications, below degree level" (code 201) of variable PEDUC contains both persons with and without secondary education degree, i.e a mix of ISCED levels 1 and 2. Since more than 30 percent of the population is included in code 201, LIS decided not to recode. If LIS users want to pursue a recode they may do so on their own responsability. The mapping below may serve as suggestion. The problematic category is pointed out. PEDUC ISCED97 LIS recode 101 no educational qualifications, never received FT-education 1 102 no educational qualifications, received FT-education 1 201 educational qualifications, below degree level 1 or 2 ? 202 educational qualifications, degree level or above 3 209 educational qualifications, level unknown 9 900 still in continuous FT-education 9 comment : the age at which completed full-time education (stored in LIS variable PSLOT1), can eventually serve to arrive at an acceptable split of category 201 into low or medium, like : - if peduc eq 201 and pslot1 under chosen treshold, then educ = low - if peduc eq 201 and pslot1 over chosen treshold, then educ = medium
