Poland 2013 now also available

Wave IX has another great addition: we are excited to announce that one new dataset from Poland, PL13, has been added to the LIS Database.

As for the previous Polish datasets included in LIS, PL13 is based on the 2013 wave of the Household Budget Survey, carried out by the Central Statistical Office / Główny Urząd Statystyczny (GUS).

Minor template revision and complete database rerun

Because of our ongoing vocation to always improve the data, we made some minor adjustments to the labour market section of the current template (i.e., the set of LIS variables and definitions).

What did we change?

  • We revised the codes and associated value labels of variables SECTOR1/2, EMPWANT, and, to a lesser extent, CLFS;
  • We introduced two new variables to fit the new ISIC Rev.4 / NACE Rev. 2 industry classification (INDD1/2);
  • We removed variable PEXP. Most original datasets did not contain relevant information allowing us to construct the variable. Hence, we decided to discontinue the provision of PEXP.

Please note that the changes were applied retroactively to the entire LIS Database.

In addition, we carried out a substantial data cleaning, which impacted the coding of variables CLFS, CMAS, UMAS, MILIT and EMP for some datasets, as well as the coding of consumption variables for datasets released before 2011.

The income variables, however, have not been affected by any of these changes. Consequently, no changes were made to the Key Figures.

See Revision Notes for details.

New data from Brazil

The LIS Database continues to grow: one new dataset from Brazil, BR13 (Wave IX), has been added.

The dataset is from the 2013 Wave of the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), carried out by the Brazilian Geographical and Statistical Institute / Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE).

In addition, the previous two waves of the same survey, BR09 and BR11, have been slightly revised to make them consistent with the older BR06, as well as with this new BR13 dataset (see Revision notes for more details).

South Africa 2012 added

We are delighted to announce that a new dataset from South Africa, ZA12 (Wave IX), has been added to the LIS Database. The dataset is from the Wave 3 of the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS), carried out by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU), at the University of Cape Town.

In addition, the previous two waves of the same survey, ZA08 and ZA10, have been revised based on the release of new original data by the data provider (see Revision notes for more details).

New country: Panama data now available in LIS Database

Isla_Bastimentos-Panama-CC-by-Fundacion Almanaque AzulWe are excited to announce that we have added a new country to the LIS Database.

Three datasets from Panama, PA07 (Wave VII), PA10 (Wave VIII) and PA13 (Wave IX), are now available.

The datasets are from the August 2007, August 2010, and August 2013 Labour Market Survey (Encuesta de Mercado Laboral – EML) version of the Continuous Household Survey (Encuesta Contínua de Hogares) from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censo – INEC).

Russia 2013 added

Kremlin-Moscow-CC-by-Leha-11We are thrilled to announce that a new dataset from Russia, RU13 (Wave IX), has been added to the LIS Database.

The dataset is from the 2013 Wave of the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE), conducted by the National Research University Higher School of Economics and ZAO “Demoscope”, together with the Carolina Population Center from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Institute of Sociology RAS.

In addition, the datasets for RU04, RU07 and RU10 have been revised for consistency; the major change implemented concerned the construction of farming self-employment income and, as a result of the change, all upper-level income variables were slightly affected, as well as the resulting Key Figures (see Revision notes).

New data from Peru

photo by Martin St AmantLIS is thrilled to announce another major addition to the LIS Database: three new datasets from Peru – PE07 (Wave VII), PE10 (Wave VIII) and PE13 (Wave IX).

The datasets are respectively from the 2007, 2010 and 2013 waves of the National Household Survey (Encuesta Nacional de Hogares – ENAHO) from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática – INEI).

In addition, PE04 (Wave VI), based on the same survey, has been revised for consistency, including the new Census weights as recalculated by the data provider.

Uruguay 2007, 2010 and 2013 added to LIS Database

photo by PolifemusWe are delighted to announce that three new datasets from Uruguay have been added to the LIS Database: UY07 (Wave VII), UY10 (Wave VIII) and UY13 (Wave IX).

The datasets are respectively from the 2007, 2010 and 2013 waves of the Continuous Household Survey (Encuesta Contínua de Hogares – ECH) from the National Statistical Office (Instituto Nacional de Estadística – INE).

In addition, UY04 (Wave VI), based on the same survey, has been revised for consistency, including a correction to the income variables, which has slightly impacted the Key Figures.

United States 2013 revised

The US13 dataset (Wave IX) was re-harmonised on the basis of the recently re-released original data; the US Census Bureau corrected the 2014 ASEC data files, which are based on the Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC) of the Current Population Survey (CPS), to accommodate an additional tax bracket into 2014 tax model.

This impacted the tax data (and hence the disposable household income) of households at the very top of the income distribution (about 0.5% of the households in the sample).

A series of minor revisions

Several datasets underwent minor revisions:

  • CA97 / PL86: variable RELATION contained a mixed code (in the 4000 category) which included also children that could not be reported separately. For clarity these observations were set to missing.
  • AU81: code 90/9 of variables OCCB1/OCCA1 has been added to separate indistinguishable cases from true missings.
  • PL95: variable STATUS1 has been considerably revised.
  • CA04 / 00 / 98: an error was corrected in variable INDA1; as a result, several missing cases have now been recovered and the variable is complete.
  • CZ96: a group of persons was recoded from employed to not employed in CLFS and EMP variables.

See Revision Notes for additional information.
